the idea is to grab your bob gear and spend the weekend outside with it.
find out what works and what doesnt , what you can take out and what you need to add.
emergencys just dont happen when its sunny and 72 deg. if you can do it in jan you can do it anytime.
last year we heard a lot of complants about it being in jan. but everyone who did it all reported a great time.
get a couple of people to do it with you .
keep back up gear in your car ,for emergencys
if you dont feel comfortable do it in your back yard .
just get out there and train.
This would certainly require me to actually get everything into my BOB.. maybe incentive to get my stuff together, organized, and actually useful should there be an emergency.
Great idea. I can't decide what I need to have in my BOB and what I don't need, this would be a great way to determine what's actually needed and what's just dead weight I can leave behind.

sounds like a good project for sunday ..
break it down to the basics .
water

a couple of ways to start fires , with some cotton balls covered with vasaline in a film cansister
knife -i carry a swiss army and a gerber lock back .
l.e.d flashlight or head light with a set of spare batteries .
some type of food , granola bars ,sealed bag of jerky is good for at least a year. mainstay bars are good for like 4 years..
a small cook set , sportsmans guide use to sell cheap east german sets we all like .
nothing cotton touches my skin in my bob , climbers have a saying cotton kills.
compass ,dont need a real fancy one..
in the winter i just carry a tarp for a shelter , in the summer a small tent..
complete change of clothes sealed in a plastic bag at the very bottom of the pack .
2 sets of polypro socks and a set of wool .. wear the poly pro under the wool and change out and wash the polypro as nessecary
i carry a pure hiker filter -last thing you need is to get sick from bad water.
i have a gortex unlined jacket i use for rain gear and layer it with my winter gear when i need to ..
polypro hooded jacket , stays warm when wet .
earth tone clothes ..
a pair of boots that are broken in .. moleskin in the firstaid kit.
small first aid kit .. asprins..
a roll of nylon twine..
i carry a small back pack stove for the family.
i carry a good sleeping bag in the winter and just a poncho liner the rest of the year .
index card telling where everything is in the pack ,with phone # on the back ..
i have a small sack i keep all the small stuff in to keep it togther .
i have a maginusm fire starter with a small piece of hack saw that stays on a cord around my neck .
swiss army knife has a cord on it so it doesnt get lost looped around part of the pack .
i carry one army type canteen with canteen cup and a camel back .
at the end of the summer i repack with winter gear and at the end of the summer i repack with summer gear ..
i have 3 days worth of instanst oatmeal , hot chocalte, lipton pasta sides, plus a few granola bars that stay in ziplock bags in the pack ..
plus a small bottle of spices.
the pasta sides are great cause they still taste good if you just have water
i can grab the pack and be out the door in two minutes and be fine for at least 3 or 4 days..
the pack lives in rubbermaid container most of the time.. out of site of snooping eyes

one good thing is , you can pack your bob while your watching a dvd , not something that is all that hard .. rain gear on top , then stuff in the order you would use it..
nice set of maps wouldnt hurt either.
