We picked up a book in the late '90s that would seem to be a good reference book for a family:
The Encyclopedia of Country Living
by Carla Emery
published by Sasquatch Books
It has lots of recipies and "how to" information

Those FireFox books are a great resource by people who actually spent their lives living off the land.
A great resource. W'eve had it for at least 20 years. A copy should be in everyones book shelf.

The Carla Emery book has been available for 30 years and updated every so often.
Look for the SURVIVOR series by Kurt Saxon (survivalplus.com or do a search of Kurt Saxon, I recommend everything Kurt put out. Buy from Kurt)
Backwoodsman Magazine
Countryside and Small Stock Journal
Backwoods Home Mag
gun books:
SURVIVAL GUNS by Mel Tappan (deltapress.com - much/most of what they put out is just "redone" military manuals and junk, some good stuff, but most is just junk to seperate you from money and doesn't work)
BOSTON'S GUN BIBLE by Boston T. Party (javelinpress.com - I recommend just about everything from here. 'Y2K and other lovely disasters' had NOTHING to do with Y2K except timing and is a GREAT book! "Hologram of Liberty' is a think piece and not much use, otherwise I recommend it all)
Books to AVOID!
Anything by Duncan Long is long on BS, short on facts. Duncan offers a "writing course" and you write a chapter for his next book. The ONLY book Duncan has personal knowledge of is HOW TO BE AN INFO WRITER where he tells you the LESS you know about a subject, the faster you can write and you won't get bogged down in details!
MOST books from Delta/Paladin/Loompanics/J. Flores. There are some good books here, but the great vast majority are worthless/useless.
While everyone loves it, I did NOT like PATRIOTS by Rawles. The "heros" are thugs, murders, highwaymen and theives. Not wel written and full of doesn't work in real life, won't work in real life, will get you killed in real life.
ASHES series - first three were good, reast formula trash.
