WASHINGTON — Most of the nation's largest cities got flunking grades on a report card released today that measures how well each city can evacuate its population before or after a major disaster.

What does it matter what the new paper says, the government is always right and will always take care of us! ;)

You have to remember the American ideal "It will not happen here so why prepare for it." Even when I lived on the coast they thought it will not happen here so we do not care about the civilians. They should have enough sense to leave if something is coming. I worked for the county EMS agency and they really had no plan or supplies. We could set up a treatment / triage area for about 50-60 people and treat maybe 10 severely - critically injured. I had to inventory the one disaster trailer because no one knew what was in it. So I am not surprised at all!!!

Pretty much what I was thinking. I was shoeing the horses that belong to a couple of St. Paul LEOs during the Katrina fiasco and asked them what the department policy was in such an event . They both said at the same time "It wont happen here" I belive I'm going to move back to Texas..........

June of '07 and we're back to the Rockies. The traffic here is already a nightmare. The news/talk radio stations now give all day traffic reports........ that just started a year ago. This area is considered a "sheep" safe zone. They can have it! The Twin Cities is a liberal cesspool.

Just out of curiosity, which way are you headed should you have to bug out? North up towards International Falls and the Quetico National Forest in Canada, or south towards warmer weather?

Neither. West! Through the Dakota's.........Staying off the Reservations! Getting to and crossing the Missouri river is the biggest hurdle. We have mapped out,and driven 4 different back routes. If the SHTF and we can be gone immediately we'll make it God willing. In the meantime we pray that we'll be safe until June of '07. When we get there permanently you'll hear my sigh of relief all the way down in TX.

Dont need to look at a news paper article or a study to see that a majority of people and cities would be screwed if they had to evacuate...just look at how hidious rush hour is on your way to work, and thats if there isnt a wreck!!! Every year there is something in the news about how bad traffic is evacuating one of the areas somewhere during hurricane season.

Every place I go I make it a point to learn every back and side road I can find so I can get to just about any destination without ever getting on to the free way system. So I could care less if I-35 is a parking lot this afternoon...I aint got no need to drive that road anyways! The best part is I rarely see a car on the way to work and only a hand full on the way home during afternnon rush hour. My drives a pleasant cruise through the country side and usually only takes me a few miles out of my way and takes less time to boot.

KCMO local here.
The vast majority of Kansas City is SOUTH of the Missouri River which runs E/W on the north side of downtown. Being a "northlander" working mainly south of the river I worry about getting across but have it made if I do.
KC does have a pretty good infrastructure with a relatively low population base. Downside is KC is a commuter town. Most folks live out in the burbs and will want out at the same time if need be during working hours.

Damn, I keep finding old threads that were up before I was here so I shall add a comment. New Orleans evac was a joke to me. I live in Savannah, GA and we get plenty of hurricane scares. If a Cat 4 were to hit, the only thing in the city which wouldn't be under water is Hunter Army Airfield (highest point in the city) so we've evac a few times in the past. The last MAJOR evacuation was for Floyd. CEMA (Chatham Emerg Mang Agency) started doing volunteer evacs for lowest lying areas when it was clear the storm would turn and not hit FL. Then they started full volunteer evacs about 4 days before the storm was to hit and then mandatory 2 days before. For those who couldn't get out on their own, the entire school bus fleet started shuttling people to shelters inland when the full voluntary evacs were issued and didnt stop until about a day before it was to hit (I think).

There's only one interstate that heads west outta here and it's 4 lane but they have gates set up so they can easily make it an all westbound road which they did and an all eastbound when we came back. Traffic still sucked but we didn't head on the interstate, we stuck to the numerous backroads which headed out of town and beat my mother and sister who were took the interstate. We left 4 hours after them and still beat them to Columbus, GA (closet place that had a room).

I feel pretty good about Savannah's evac plan. If it was a sudden SHTF event... I don't know but I think I'd wanna have a tank, no problems shoving through that way. :-)
