I have many pairs of boots these days, Belleville, Danner, Bates, McRae, HiTec, Doc Martin and Red Back to name a few, I get good use out of most of them (wear the Doc's, HiTec an Red Backs at work and the others hunting etc).

I have recently been toying with a pair of "non military" type boots, particularly the Zamberlans (OK.....so maybe I am cheating as the model I have been taken with is now issue to Aussie SF types in Arsecrackestan and Iraq) they are Italian made leather boots with a Goretex lining etc. Not nearly as "high" as most of my boots and certainly not having that "look" to them. I have also been looking at Meindl as an option.

Anyone with more experience than I with such boots...??

I can also see situations where a "non military" looking boot (I have nothing against such boots and use them more than any type) may have some small advantages when people are taking more note of such things.

The only time I am not in boots is when I am wearing running shoes or shower shoes(flip Flops). I have given up on trying to blend in with the sheepl and use my runners for exercise or hot days when I am wearing shorts. Even if your boots aren't government issue they still may get some attention and your tread pattern will be more distinctive in the wild than a running shoe. And honestly if the rest of you looks government issue then your foot wear really don't matter much.

I haven't worn boots of any type since retiring seven months ago. I can't say I miss them much, probally due to the fit and/or construction. Now I spend most days in flip-flops or sneakers.

The most comfortable "non-militart type" boots I've worn is Rocky "Stalkers". No break in, lite-weight, and water proof. Not even sure if Rocky still makes that model anymore.

Finally got (at a BARGIN...really I can't believe how well I SCORED) the boots I was after... Zamberlan Civettas ....

Got to get 'em "broken in" yet but I am happy enough with the fit and such roaming the house. Need a few more pairs of good socks now as well.

I found that when I wear my Beville's when flying the security folks tend to treat me with more respect. I assume they think that I am in the service. I used to pack them in my check-in, but now I pack my street shoes and wear the boots. They are more comfortable for walking anyway.
