does anyone know anything about the indian enfields in 308? i found one in great condition, wood doesn't look like its even seen cosmoline. the thing is, its a carbine and i can't find anything on it, only the full size rifles. it doesn't look like any kind of a custom job.

thats not it, that one was made by great britain, this one is straight indian origin. i know that a bunch of 308 enfields were converted to carbines when they had the big influx a while ago, but this is original

Not the safest rifle conversion going. The SMLE action was not designed to take the kind of pressure that 7.62 x 51 loads produce. Some commercial .308 loads are even higher pressure than NATO spec 7.62. I'd be very wary of using a .308 Enfield and darn scared of using an INDIAN copy of an Enfield. You do understand that the Enfield has only 1 locking lug?

To paraphrase: I've you've got a $200 life use a $200 gun. My safety is worth too much to use a single lug Enfield with loads that it wasn't designed for.

i keep reading about different steel and heat treating methods being used or some such kind of stuff. being that this rifle is somewhat rare i'd probably not shoot it any way.

SMLE's are interesting rifles and I ike them. On the other hand I'm in the process of selling off my "Safe Queens" and putting the resources into stuff that I'll use.
