Anyone have expirence with 9MM AR's? I looked at a Colt a few days ago and wonder how well they function.

From searching I gather that Colt only does small runs of them and they are all for LE/Military.

I was impressed with how light it was and the AR platform seems user friendly. I had a Beretta "Storm" 9MM and it was really a disapointment. Terrible bolt slap. I felt like someone was slapping my cheek everytime I fired it. Sold it off to someone who really wanted it. I don't miss it....

So what is good and bad about the Colt / AR 9mm?

Colt 9mm's are notorious for what has come to be called the "Colt burp."

During rapid mag changes, when "slapping" or forcefully inserting a mag into the well to ensure proper seating, it is very common for the mag to dump all its rounds straight out of the ejection port.

Plus, they are more expensive than their 5.56 cousins, and they are chambered for a pistol cartridge.

Thats the bad.

The only good I can think of is the AR platform, to me at least, is user friendly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply!!

How about when converted UZI mags are used? I understand that the converted mags won't hit the BHO but they are alot cheaper than Colt mags.

Actually, I'm not sure. Rock River Arms is making a AR based 9mm that uses UZI mags. And me personally, I'd buy RRA or Bushmaster before I'd ever buy a Colt.

I don't know what the mag modification consists of, but here is my thoughts on it: If the modification is to the feed lips to make them the same as the original Colt mags, why wouldn't you have the same problems? But if the mod is to the mag catch hole, and it doesn't interfere with the feed lips, you should be fine.

I'd shoot RRA a email to ask what the mod consists of. They should be able to tell you exactly what they did to the UZI mags to make them work.

Hope this helps.

What is better about the RRA / Bushy vs Colt?

Colt's quality has gone down the toliet since the 90's, plus you are paying too much for the name. The newer Colt's I have seen, the fit and finish left a lot to be desired. The basic Colt rifles are going for several hundred dollars more than their equvilant (sp?) from other manufacturers. I'd buy their guns for the collector value, but Bushy and RRA are building fighting rifles. Stag Arms is another newcomer to look at. Just my humble opinion.

Here's an example:

Colt M4

S&W M&P15T (I believe Stag Arms builds them)

Look at the difference in the two. The bone stock Colt is several hundred dollars more without the rails. The S&W, all you have to do is add your optics and grips.

The one I looked at was a "Blue Label" w/ all the "evil" features and the original box , packaging, manual, sling, magazines.... The owner said it was about 15 years old. It did seem like a nice rifle and I like the AR's ergonomics. I'll look into a RRA / Bushy too.

Ammo being what it is now I hate to shoot 7.62 x 51 or 5.45 x 45 anymore. 9MM is still $157 / k at Wally World (at least for the time being) and reloading w/ lead projos is still kinda reasonable.

I had a Beretta Storm and was VERY disappointed with it.

If you are dead set on a 9mm rifle, then look at one of the semi MP5 clones that are being sold by Atlantic Firearms. Buddy of mine had a knockoff with the fake suppresser/16 inch barrel and had nothing but praise for it.

Of course its still a 9mm. But for what they are, they're good guns.

9mm isnt a good round...I would go with somthing that fired the 45 cal. round..slower moving more damage...or a carbine that does not fire hand gun rounds...go all the way.... sig 556 is nice have you searched it out yet?:) :)

9mm isnt a good round..

Thems Fighting Words!!!

Not wanting to start a 45 vs 9 fight, all i want to say is that we as civilians are not limited to full metal jacket rounds as are the military. There have been quite a few advances in bullet design since the 9mm was introduced over 60 years ago.

9MM vs 45.... That's another subject than what I was asking about. I've read many threads about the merits and bad points of each.

I really want a 9MM carbine, not a .45ACP Sure 45 is more powerfull but it's also about the same price per round as .223. 9MM is cheaper, lower recoiling and my better half can shoot it with less flinching problems.

Back to the point. What are peoples experiences with the Colt 6450. Good or bad.
