I am a newbie on this forum and this is my first post so be kind....:D

Has anyone done any research on finding something to replace lead shot when reloading shot shells? Some product that is environmentally friendly and still has enough density to knock down steel targets at a cowboy match.

My wife and I shoot SASS cowboy action about 3 times a month so reloading is necessary to keep costs down. (we save approximately $2 a box and use 2 each per match) Plus her arthritic shoulder needs the lower recoil we can regulate by custom reloading ammo for our hammered double.

Now that lead prices are heading for the roof, (we last payed $35.00 for a 25 lb bag here in North Central Florida in November 07), I have been cogitating about what could be used as a cheap substitute and still have enough impact to handle the steel knock-down targets and clay pop-ups which are usually set at about 21 - 25 feet.

We cannot use steel shot or mag loads per our rules, so currently I load 3/4 oz of lead #8's in 2-3/4" shells on top of 12 grains of Red Dot.

I been thinking about hard peas, kitty litter, rock salt, popcorn kernels, deer corn, small pea gravel, etc.

Has anyone any input on this subject?

Thanks, Buckeye Charly

Small pea gravel seems like a bad idea. Could be harsh on your barrle and what about when it hits the steel target? Possibility of rock fragments comming back at you.

I can't think of anything that would do well as a substitute for lead shot. Dense plactic or rubber slugs might work, but you would have the bounce back problem.
