Availablity is fast becoming critical. If anyone has information on why, please share.

I suggest in the strongest terms that anyone serious about obtaining a supply of strike anywhere matches purchase a LIFETIME supply ASAP and do it Muy Pronto !

For whatever it’s worth, I recently pulled out some of my old stock (not sure - maybe 10 years old) “strike anywhere” matches after a similar discussion over on FAL Files, and discovered that they’d gone bad. It was as if the match’s head compound had gotten soft, and simply crumbled when you tried to strike it.

I’ve heard people blame humidity for this, and that might be a factor (they were just kept in the kitchen cabinet - not vacuum sealed or anything) but I live in Arizona for heaven’s sake. Not too much of a humidity problem here. If humidity is really to blame, I wonder how people can manage in a place like Mississippi.

In any case, my local Safeway still sells “strike anywhere” matches, and I’m thinking of buying a few boxes, vacuum sealing and dating them, and then setting them aside for a few years to see what happens.

Incidentally, way back in the Old Days (late 1970’s, during the Mel Tappan survivalist boom) I bought up a bunch of butane lighters and thought I had it made. I checked them about 20 years later, and the flints had all turned to dust (the butane still burned okay, though). I haven't the slightest idea what might have happened - why would the flints disintegrate like that?????

Awfully hard to plan for the long-term sometimes . . .

The only place I have seen them in the last few years was when we traveled down to Kentucky to set up a deer stand and scout some lanes. We stopped at a "rustic" country store for grub and they had several boxes of Penley brand strike anywhere matches. We bought all of them...

At least a box worth has been individually dipped in candle wax, allowed to dry and placed into unused prescription pill bottles... While it was a tedious task, we now have a supply of matches that should last us quite a while...

I've gotten them at the local Ace hardware store.
