I’ve been hearing that the price of wheat has taken a jump lately, so I thought I’d pick up a few #50lb bags at the local feed store to stash away in case times get bad. Okay, they're selling it as chicken feed, and it's not as thoroughly cleaned as the prestige brand from Idaho that costs 4x as much (and don't forget to add long-distance shipping charges to your bill) but heck, at one-quarter the price, I’ll deal with a little extra chaff.

Holey Moley, bags of wheat that were going for $8.49 six months ago are going today for $10.99!

And they keep telling us there’s no inflation . . .

If you’re thinking of storing some wheat long-term, it might be a good time to pick up a few bags. Given the crashing dollar, and the mass move towards corn as an ethanol crop, I doubt that wheat will be getting cheaper anytime soon.

I tried plastic trashcans many years ago, and the rodents chewed right through them within a few months.

I'm storing right now in galvanized steel trashcans (from Home Depot - about $18 each). I just clean out the cans well (they seem to come from the factory with a thin coat of oil) stuff in the bags, and then drop in a chunk of dry ice (to clear out any pests that might be lurking inside the bags) and then put on the steel lid. The next day (after the dry ice has completely dissipated) I seal the lids to the cans with duct tape.

Not too scientific, but it seems to work okay.
