So I've been trying to figure this one out. How do you go about carrying something, like say a AR15 or a FAL without looking conspicuous (sp?)? I plan on purchasing an AR15 in the very near future and purchasing a vest for it from Tactical Tailor. Both are good and all but if you're trying not to go so unnoticed, how do you guys plan on doing so? Both are rather large weapons and carrying their mags could be difficult trying to conceal them. Just looking for ideas. I figure if SHTF I won't really give a flying fart about concealment if I'm actually looking at possibly engaging someone. Just looking for bouncing some ideas around.

We have had this discussion at Near Death Experiments (http://www.neardeathexperiments.com/smf/index.php?topic=501.0) a few times and I think the best option I saw was a guitar case, bat bag or the like... Something that carries well and does not scream "Look at me, I'm carrying a concealed rifle...!!!!"

A buddy of mine who lives in an occupied area uses a Hockey Bag, complete with sticking out hockey sticks. This probably won't work in Texas, but works fine up North.

Haha, not sure if that would work in Georgia either.

You are probably right. How about a golf bag, or even a bag with a Lacrosse stick? Hidden in plain sight.. :)

Hmm... that just might work! Lacrosse is pretty big around here.

Gentlemen,
I'm not sure any bag large enough to conceal a rifle will go unnoticed during a disaster situation. If everyone is running around hungry looking for food, gas, cash, water, etc., why would someone be walking down the street with a guitar case, golf clubs, lacrosse bag, or hockey stick bag when there are more important concerns and immediate needs to be met? I doubt very many people went out to play golf in New Orleans during Katrina. Under the circumstances, a guy with a golf bag is clearly going to be seen as hiding something important or useful to the poeple who would try to take it from him. Even a handgun hidden inside a student's backpack will draw attention from thugs. "What's in that bag, man? Food? Money? Water? Give it up!" If people are hungry, they'll try to steal anything you have to trade it for the things they need. The only way to get them to keep their distance from you is for them to visibly see that you are armed. Hopefully if you have to bug out, you will be able to load your vehicle at night in such a manner that your firearms are easily accessable but won't be readily seen by criminals and LEOs.

NVDON,
I believe that if you go back and read the original post you will note that we were not talking about SHTF situations, but regular every day ones.
However, you points are valid, and I do believe that you would be correct in that type of scenario.
BTW, welcome to the board :)

sports stuff should work well. However having it already in place means you don't have to transport it. I carry it out to the garage and load it in my car, toss a blanket over it and head to the range. Toss the blanket over it and head home. I have arms in place at home, and in my other fall back places. The one place, I don't have anything in place, is at my dad's house. Its just not an option any more. He has moved to a bad place. If it all goes bad, he will be coming here or dieing there. He is stuborn so I suspect he will chose to die there. He is among friends and will not leave them. He is funny that way.
I have never really had trouble moving guns around. I have done it often right out in the open. I have never had a problem, then again I don't live in California or New York. I can't imagine that you would have trouble doing it in texas. They all have guns don't they?
If you want to move something without notice, or you want to move something you don't want the neighbors to know you have, a laundry bag full of clothes and a fist full of quarters, would not get a lot of attention.
So your off to do some laundry huh?
1. Yup washer broke.
2. Nope, going home to let mom do it.
3. nope, going to donate this suff to charity as I don't wear it any more.
4. Yup got too much to do in my own machine in the time I have. Going to do 4loads at once down at the laundry mat. See ya later, gotta run.
sports bags
musical instrument cases
PVC pipe, (don't laugh its been done and documented)
Tool boxes (depending on how it breaks down and how large a tool box you can find and carry)
Dont' rule out rolling tool cabnets
The tool box in the back of your truck can hide a multitude of sins. I know my dad's does.
Those car top cariers can also hid a multitude of sins. I know mine does.
again depending on how it breaks down, regular luggage can hid a lot of things.

If concealability is a major concern, you might want to rething going with an AR-15 or FAL and go with a Mossberg 500 12 guage with the 18 inch barrel and a pistol grip. Granted, only five rounds in the shotgun compared to 20 in the magazine of an FAL, but with the variety of shot available (ever see what a 12 guage slug does?) you have a lot of flexibility plus concealability.
