I remember a couple of weeks ago someone said something about cleaning a well out or "shocking' it. Anyone here been there done that/ My ex-bil did his once when I wasn't around and I now have a place that has a well and I want to insure a great water supply for my horses versus one that is ok.
Any help will greatly be appreciated!:)

I remember the post, but can't remember the details. It sounds like your well may be fine, but you want to make sure its great. Have the water tested. Your local extension office should have details on who does the testing, usually a major university in your area. Or your state's DNR.

If the water comes back in range on everything, don't shock the well. Don't fix what ain't broke. If the water is good enough for human consumption, your horses will be fine.

If you are really worried, test it every year. The tests are cheap, my parents spend twelve bucks a year getting their well tested.

Out where I live, one usually doesn't mess with the well unless a test comes back positive for bacteria. Then, all they do is dump in some ordinary chlorine bleach and let it sit. Not too scientific, but seems to work.

Here are some great instructions from Oregon State University on "shocking a well" (the RIGHT way, I guess).

Otherwise, as xdshooter says, one ordinarily doesn't fix it if it's not broken. :o

Thank you so much!! I agree that if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I figured I should know what to do now rather than at the last minute. Preparedness,eh?
Seriously,thank you both!!
