Survival Food Stores Planning, one man's aproach.

Notice that I take a comprehensive approach to food preparation. I use the 3 catagory approach.

Strategic :

In this catagory we have the long term storage type #10 can ( or smaller sized ) vacuum packed dehydrated or freeze dried foods. Also you have pouch type dehydrated and freeze dried type long term storage foods ( ie. Mountain House ).

Heirloom and hybred Seeds vacuum packed is a MUST to include in these stores.

This is the most expensive of the food stores to be purchased.

They will be the long term base food supply in the event of a very long term disaster or SHTF situation.

Medium term :

This type consists of a very diverse selection of commercial / consumer
I. Can goods to include:
a. fruit
b. vegetables
c. side dishes ( ie. macaroni & cheeze, potatoes dishes, Pasta,

d. meats ( vienna sausages, tuna, chicken, beef, turkey, fish,
e. entrees ( stews beef & chicken, chili, hash, chicken & noodles, roast
beef, turkey, soups both condensed and ready to eat, Pasta
( ie. spagetti & Meatballs etc. ),
f. cheeze
g. sauces, gravies, and condements
h. crackers and cookies
i. milk
j. deserts
k. juice
l. nuts
m. anything else you may think of

II. Box packed chili, juice, and soups.

III. Pouch packed meats ( tuna, chicken etc. ), biscuit / muffin mixes,
dried fruits, mashed potatoes, nuts, juice, etc.

These food stores form the heart of the initial and medium term consumable food stuffs you and your group will depend upon in any major disaster or SHTF type situation.

Tactical :

Granola and energy bars, small fruit pouches, jerky, nuts, box chili, juice, pouch meats, light weight can meats, and other light weight eatables.

This catagory supplies the needs of hunting and foraging parties as well as those standing watch not to forget combat operations.

As one can see, many different types of needs for food stores exist and must be met.

Make no mistake about it, one will need hundreds and hundreds of cans, pouch, box, type food stores to supply even a small sized group ( 10-12 ) for any long term disaster of SHTF situation.

The same goes for T.P. , hygene, and medical supplies.

I know there are other specifics I have forgotten but time is limited at this time so please contribute.

Most "survivors" know much of the food you mentioned, but one wasn't....

The "Strategic", that did mention about "storage type #10 can ( or smaller sized ) vacuum packed dehydrated", but didn't mention about the buckets of grains (and a few other food).

Buckets of dehydrated (sort of) wheat, rice, beans, etc. (as well as potatos) that are some of the cheapest food. 42-44 lbs. in a 6 gallon plastic bucket is around $20-25 each, which is pretty inexpensive. Even beans are usually $35-45 a bucket.

Throwing 5 - 10 ozs. of ham, chicken, beef or fish in a pot of rice or beans provide a filling dinner of a family for little cost. Great option.

The freeze-dried cans of food is pretty expensive, for the few dinners in the can.., but dehydrated vegetables are TOO expensive. Usually not quite as tasty than wet cans, or freeze-dried, but you get quite more dinners per can of the dehydrated green beans, corn, broccolis, etc, etc. Not too expensive in the "Strategic" food sets.

In the "Tactical" food, in the "hunting/foraging/combat" and BOB, I go for the lightest, smallest, and longest usable food, which is jerky and pinole, but usually add a small bottle of oil or one can of bacon (which provides a nice set of tasty fat, too.)
