Well, I was thinking and wanted some input from you guys about converting my WWII weapons into better SHTF weapons. These are the things I'm pondering doing.

Right now I have 2 rifles, an M1 Garand and a 98k. Love both of them. For the Garand I'm thinking about making into, basically a scout rifle. Scope, flashlight and laser it. Thoughts?

The 98k I'm thinking about making into a long range rifle, installing a scope and what not. The problem is, is well, I don't know where to get a scope mount of the damn thing. I look for them and I found LOTS of WWII mounts but they cost assload, can anyone help out?

Thanks!

Try S&K Insta-Mounts (Google it).

I tricked out a Russian M44 and a Swiss K31 last year with these. They have a model for many different military rifles.

It'll make a collector get hives, but with my crappy eyesight, scoping them made a lot of sense to me.

As long as you have plenty of ammo, that's all you really need. That and a sufficient means to clean the firearms.

I ran similar to this for a few years, so I will share my thoughts.

Don't scope the Garand unless your eyes need it. It will work wonders just as it is with some practice (at least you can get some inexpensive ammo for it)

I took my K98 (not a collector item) and put a regular scope mount on it. I then added a Timney trigger. The scope mount is a one piece base over the bolt (typical mount). Of course with this I do not get the rapid reload. If I had to do it again, I would use a 2 piece mount for more clearance in loading rounds. The scope sits high, so I have a modified cheek piece on it for that. Not the best, but it works pretty darn well. In a pinch I can rip off the scope and still use the irons.

Thanks everyone for you're thoughts. I've decided that I'm not going to scope the Garand. I'm pretty darn good with it at 100 yards (haven't really tried further) but do think I'll use the scout mount to mount a flash light on it.

I had wondered about the 98k mount and reloading. Figured hand reload would be called for.

Thanks again everyone!

If you can punch a 3" paper plate at 100 all day with the Garand, then you should be able to do a 10" one at 400 or farther. The rifle is capable with a good tight stock.

I can use the 98 out to 400 without too much trouble, but farther than that I would need to look into getting a new barrel. Mine has been shot a lot, and was pretty worn from cleaning by the previous owners (since 1938). Handloading does help, but don't expect stellar performance from wartime barrels.
