OK, I'm young, I was only around for 3 years of the Cold War but I'm a history geek so I know a lot about it. Anyway, kinda beside the point I guess. I'm sure some if not all of you have been following the dealings going on with Russia and the US missile defense system stuff. For those who don't, here's the quick run down:

US wants to install radars in the Czech Republic and intercepter missiles in Poland for possible missiles incoming to Europe from Iran. Russia is feeling threatened and today has said that if the US proceeds, they will have to have new targets in Europe (the system). Iran says its missiles can't even reach Europe but they are full of crap as always because they are building a rocket that could put sats in space which means, it could deliever a warhead to Europe. All in all, it just sounds like another arms race is brewing.

I was just wanting to hear some of your thoughts about it. Does it sound Cold Warish?

Here's what i think. I think we should install the radars and intercepters in Europe yet I can't blame Russia for being WTF? About it and deciding to have missiles and weapons targeting the radars and defenses. Iran, well Iran needs to be nuked anyway. But that could just be me. :p

Really not too much to worry about here. Russia's technology is marginal, and their quality assurance is non-existant. Their economy can't afford to feed and pay the military, much less upgrade any systems (or at least perform upgrades that might cost money). Putin is talking out of his asshole, and hoping that the U.S. is stupid enough to believe him. He's playing poker with a pair of fours... all he can do is bluff!

after many years of cold war i find that in this case that we are in the wrong,
to want to post missles within the ussr's strike zone . you can pick any name you want to describe the current situation ( terroism ) ect. but the ussr has no reason to trust the u.s. .
there is just to much bad blood in our history . let the europeans post their own defense system ,and let us do something real like enforce our own
border security. we have arabs crossing the mexico border along with the
folks from china on a regular basis . this is hard information that i know on a first hand
basis .

I agree 100% with ya bob. I thought that too when I read about it, why don't we let Europe worry about their own problems, they hate us anyway, well, except the Brits, YAY BRITS! :D

This reminds me of the time when we put improved range missiles in West Germany in the 80s.

Basically what Putin wants to threaten is breaking many many treaties signed since the 1980s about strategic missiles. Its a "realm of influence" problem, Russia doesn't like American influence so close to its neighbors, much like Cuba in 1960, post revolution. And that THAT crisis was actually started by us, with the stationing of Thor missiles in Turkey.

Anyway I seriously doubt Putin would retarget his strategic missiles, because then we would not be bound by that same treaty, and could retarget Russian cities (or Iranian)...

But this is nothing like the Cold War... it was ...different... you HAD to watch the news to know if/when/what was going to set the spark. Or if nothing at all would start it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov)
