want something canned that is good for you ...

While I'm hardly the expert, this is a bit of a paradox for us preppers, since the canned goods that are conisdered most healthful during "normal" times are probably less than ideal during a disaster situation.

That is, during "normal" times, tuna fish packed in water is preferable (lower calories, less added fat, more remaining Omega-3 fish oil). But, during a crisis, the extra fat from "oil-packed" tuna would add valuable fats and calories - which will likely be in short supply if food ever becomes scarce.

So . . . tough one to answer! I recently bought up a case of Hormel Turkey Chili, which was on sale at Safeway for $1/can. Exp. dates were all in the 2010 range. Since I'll likely eat all that Turkey Chili before the expiration date anyway, it's probably a good buy for me.

But, if you don't LIKE Hormel Turkey Chili, than it's a bargain at no price.

Recall also that SPAM reportedly lasts almost forever!

Can food is PART of a balanced food plan.

Please, go read my posts on sources of Freeze Dried, De-Hydrated, and MRE foods (Links below).

Here is my thread on commercial food date and shelf life .

As for Nutrition and storage information; look at the links below.

From personal and the experience posted by others on the WWW it has been established that commercial can food if stored under cool dark conditions will last for years with little loss of taste but loss of nutrition and suffer water separation.

Also look at the Locator thread link below.

I hope this helps.

can goods are good long after the EX date
years after ,date code are a new thing some canners still dont use them
dates on can goods are a safty net for the canner
and they use them so when some dumb ass eats a can of what ever that is bulged and has something growing in it and dies the family dosent have a case in court

and rember if you are storing can goods for a world gone to poo poo type of thing
stock the most fattning hi cal thing you can bye

365 cans of corn beef hash at 900 cals per can will keep you alive a lot longer than 365 cans of green beans at 70 cals per can

i have heard it takes 650 cals min to keep you alive per day
