We are currently working on one in Lexington, KY in Oct or Nov.

There are shoots in the works for TN, OR, LA, FL as well, but not sure if we will get those in yet this year.

These are great instructional events that are familiy friendly as well as budget friendly.

Feel free to PM me here to get further information about the shoots and the program.

If you don't see a shoot close enough to you, and would like to host one, let me know. I will get you started in the process (it is very easy) and see if we can't get one going near you. All we really need is 25 meters and a good backstop, could be a range, farm or hill side. We supply the instructors, targets and fun!

OK, I'm pretty dumb about this stuff, what is it exactly? I'm down for going to the Savannah one but what do you do? What is it?

Here is a link to the Appleseed forum, this thread will give you a bunch of useful information.

I will try to give you a quick run down of what to bring and what to expect.

What to Expect:

Depending on the range set up, you will start at 25 meters, shooting reduced size targets, to simulate 100,200,300,400,500 yard targets. They will instuct you on the 6 steps in firing a good shot, then later some short cuts and some instructional aids. You will be given instruction on field positions and shooting sling use. There will be many 5-10 shot "instructional" strings of shots, working on a specific area of "firing the shot". You will work with another shooter to do ball and dummy drills, to sort out any mistakes you are making. They will teach you how to "read" your target, so that you may make some determinations as to the mistakes you are making, by where your shots are going. You will learn how to make elevation and windage adjustments, how to calculate how much to move your sights. You will learn how and where to set your "Battle sight zero". Range and time permitting, you will be able to shoot out to 300 yards, perhaps more (I am not familiar with the range) to confirm that what you have been learning at 25 meters actually works out at actual ranges.

I highly suggest that you go to Fred's M14 stocks and get the following:

Freds Rifleman 25-Meter Targets w/Freds Guide to Becoming a Rifleman Here is a link http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/catalog/acc.asp

This will give you a bunch of the AQT targets that you will be seeing at the shoot (they contain a good bit of info), and you will get Fred's Rifleman Guide, which has a TON of useful information. Do some dry firing, some 25 meter AQT shooting prior to the shoot, you will gain a bunch from the instuction when you get there.

What to bring:

-Ear plugs AND ear muffs, it gets loud with 30-50 rifles going off at the same time.
-Eye protection
-Elbow pads, the kind without hard shells on the outside
-shooting pad-cheap foam from Wal-mart works
-@ 400 rounds of ammo
-at least 3 mags for mag fed weapons
-an extra rifle, if you have it, for a spare
-an USGI web sling, they are @$7-12 and are one of the best shooting slings
-Lots of water to drink, and snacks for on the firing line, the shooting goes fast and you are shooting all day, with a lunch break.
-Sun screen
-Rain gear, we shoot rain or shine
-note pad and pencil and Sharpie marker
-Staple gun and staples, makes things go faster
-hat for sun and rain
-Pain reliever, you will be sore, but it is a good sore.

You will have a lot of fun and will learn a bunch.

Report back here once you go, let us all know how it went!

Ask questions here if you wish, I will help where I can.

Will you be at the SAV one fun?

I doubt that I will be at SAV, it is quite a ways from home here in Kentucky. You never know, that is a long ways away. There is so much growth and changes at RWVA right now, I am trying to help with Admin duties now, but heck, by Sept, I might be Cheif target holder;)

Don't hesitate to ask questions here though, several guys here have been to Appleseed shoots. I am always happy to answer questions.

I will say that the experience can be very sobering. Here I went to one thinking that I wasn't too bad of a shot, and shot "unqualified' all weekend. For those that don't know, there are four levels, three of which are below Rifleman. Actually only two, as unqualified is just that. So I have been sent to permanent Latrine duty as I don't rate cook.

It was good to see many new shooters make Rifleman, and at least half did, probably more.

If you think "I don't have the rifle for it", just beg or borrow a 10/22 or something similar and use that. Trust me, it is just as hard.

lol i'm working on it, i think my mom is going with me, seeing how she shoots it's gonna be fun watching her shoot.....lol. P.S. she's a pretty good shot for an old lady, dont tell her i said she's old, i like breathing.

trying to get the word out to others about the shoot, and will try to bring more with me.

never seen or heard more than 5 rifles on the firing line, think about having 100 rifles on the lone going off.................sweet!!!!!

Bidah are you still working on the 6 steps? Have you signed up for the next Appleseed?

Everyone else, Do you have what it takes to shoot to rifleman standards? goto applseedinfo.org to find the schedule, and go to a clinic near you. Take a friend or three. Nice to know how your friends shoot! If you think you don't need the training take the Texas challenge. If you score rifleman first try you get your enrollment money back. If not, It will cost you an extra $50 for the organization. Who's up for it?

CS,

Yes, I am still working on it. I am slowly seeing improvement, or at least I believe that I am. I have been conditioning myself to get into the sitting position as well since I could not even attempt that before. It isn't comfortable yet, but dang, I can actually get down and up, although slowly.

I have not signed up for another one yet. There is only one more here, and I do not know if I can swing it yet, or if I will even be close to ready for it. I am also not sure if I can take more than one humiliating experience per year.. :)

I am also working on my oldest son so maybe I can get him to come next year. He would be using a Henry Mini-Bolt as the 10/22 doesn't fit him yet, and I have to figure out a sling arrangement for it.

Great, Have you tried a modified sitting position? There are several variaions.

Bidah

CS,

I am trying a bunch of different variations. What I have found is that true sitting is the most stable, for me, when I can accomplish it. That position has always been a problem as I just don't bend (and I have not forced it, at any age). I believe that I can make it work now, it will just take some time to get my body to do it comfortably. Taking TKD these last few years has helped to limber me up some, in some cases more than I have ever been. When I started I *might* be able to kick you in the knee, now I can do chest high. It just takes some perserverance.

For targets I have been using those self sealing ones from justshootmeproducts.com. You can get them as swingers from 1" up, so you can simulate range pretty well. You can even get a Tank if you want to.. :) I don't know if they mold them, or cut them, but I have often wondered how easy it would be to get custom shapes done (and colors). That way I know when I hit it, and I don't have to walk back and forth.. :) They will take centerfire .223 and .308, but the small 1" ones won't last a long time doing that with .308. I have one 6" disk that I can set at 200 and work on hitting it as it makes a nice 3moa target.
