Based on how traffic was during the Rita evacuation here in houston I'd probably get further much faster on one of these than attempting to drive.

I don't plan on bugging out as that I live in the sticks now.But if I had to I would use my Deuce and a half. It's capable of hauling all of my supplies and go just about any where.
I have a few options - jeep being one

But most likely I'll Bug in, and use it as a neighborhood patrol vehicle when that day comes.

Not real fast, not much cargo room, expensive to drive but I bet I move or drive over any motorist that gets in the way! Not to mention I can boom out over trees for a nice vantage point.

Seriously though if I were going to bug out This is what I would use. This truck has never let me down or got stuck and belive me it has been in the woods, mointains, swamps, and ponds. '76 F350 1 ton ext. cab camper special. Passes everything but a gas station!:o

I posted about this awhile ago over on Falfiles. My BOV is an 88 3/4T suburban, lifted 4" and sitting on 35" tires. Yeah, it's big and drinks alot of gas, but I can fit all my crap inside and even live in the back seat if need be. I don't really plan on bugging out, but if I gotta go, it should get me wherever I need to. Only major change I still have to do is build a rear bumper/tire carrier/fuel can rack for it. Been looking around the net for plans but haven't come up with much. There are several Jeep bumpers that I really like the deisgn of, go guess when I get back from my current trip to Iraq I'll end up buying a welder and seeing what I can fab up.

1911, ever consider one of the carryalls that fit in the receiver hitch? it would keep you from pulling a trailer but a steel tube the size of the hitch could be put on the back of the trailer and would be removable/interchangeable.
Just a thought.
And take care overseas, and THANK YOU.

Doc,
Yeah, I love my Jeep and just like the 'burban. I can fit all my "gotta have" gear in the Jeep but can fit all my "niceta have" stuff in the 'burban, plus more range and able to sleep inside.
Sparkky, I have one of the receiver cargo racks for the Jeep, can use it on the 'burban but then I can't open the rear doors without downloading the rack. I'm trying to come up with a design for a swing-away tire carrier/cargo rack for the 'burban kinda like all the ones you see on Jeeps. Right now the big-ass spare takes up alot of room inside and would like to be able to carry several spare jerry cans on the outside of vehicle. I have a rough idea what I want, just haven't put much on paper yet 'cuz I've still got over 9 months left here before I get home and start building.
thanks for the well wishes and thoughts.
PS, sure wish I could get some of the gear I come across over here home! Just ended up with a 40mm ammocan full of those penflare launchers w/flares (about 60 sets) that a departing unit gave me. Can't bring'em back stateside tho, customs would shit. :(

AND (in theory anyway) you could always put a towbar on the Jeep, effectively turning it into a quasi- trailer/scout vehicle to the Burb's Kommand post/sleeping quarters...

01 Dodge Cummins, 4x4, 4:10 gears, 33" BFGs and a power chip. It will likley pull the house behind it if I find a big enough chain.
Diesel is far easier to find in the event of a mass evac, and decent enough fuel economy for a big truck with low gears.

Mine. 98 12V 5 speed. As long as I can get voltage to the shutoff solenoid it will run forever. Oh, it gets 18-21MPG.

there is a subaran in town they mounted the spare tire on the front bumper , dont think that helps fuel milage but it gets it out of the inside.

I have UPGRADED my BOV finally. I had a 2005 Explorer 4x4 as my only means of transportation. I have traded that in and now I have a 2004 Chevy Avalanche Z71 that is ready to go. I am not fortunate to have enough cash flow to buy another vehicle at this time. I am keeping my eyes open, but atleast now I have something with cargo space and the back window comes out to lay the "GET OFF MY ASS" fire out out of!!! :D
I do plan to equip it with a brush guard, rear bumper guard, tail light guards, 3" lift, bigger tires (size unsure of right now, I hear 33's will fit without a lift kit!!!), a myriad of survival gear, and extra lights on the front and rear. Hopefully a winch at some point too. And I am going to check on manual locking fronts!

1977 Chevy Blazer Chalet. 400CID. HD everything. Actually, the first factory expedition type vehicles made. I bought it almost new as a designated bug out vehicle. I keep her ready and fully loaded in her own barn. I can bug out in twenty minutes time. 31 gallons of fuel and other "things" need to be loaded.
Every ten years, I replace everything rubber, also pumps, fluids, carb. I took this picture after I changed out the gas tank and rebuilt the HEI distributor. I save the old ignition module's in an ammo can. With only 44k miles it seems like a waste of money. But reliability comes first.
I added an on board 110v two bank battery charger. Since then, the batteries have eaten the trays, inner fender and now my hood. Definitely a bad idea.
This rig is awesome for camping or surf fishing on the beach.

93 Diesel 4.2l Landcruiser. Barn doors, 2 inch lift, Cooper ST Tyres, ARB Bullbar, siderails and steps. Kaymar rear bar/tow hitch with wheel carrier (plus another spare under. 150l fuel tanks. I know a little about those Fred Flintstone floorpans. But I'm working on rearranging mine a little differently anyway, so I've got a bunch of sheet metal left over.
