We should start a thread about do it yourself gear that you use for survival or camping. Not just what the item is but how it was made. While I like the Esbit stove and foil some people like stoves made from Pepsi cans. I don't know how to make them but I like the idea. I was wondering how many of you have made your own survival tins or your own first aid kits? Or how about homemade tents ,Ponchos ect. Yesterday at the range I saw 2 sticks on the ground tied together and knew that someone had improvised a bi pod. So like a good scavenger I used them for the same thing. Any clever tips here.

years ago went camping. this was in pa. near pymatuming lake, and an old feller used to let me go pick corn from his fields. 13 for a buck, it still had the morning dew on it when i pelled it. had a pot, but forgot the carb. for the propane stove. found some 1" angle iron, cut it so i could hang the pot over a wood fire. when i went home the pot was black, ate alot of corn. when we went back to camp 3 weeks later, the cut angle iron was on another site, and someone else used it. rich

also had a cast iron mountain pie cooker. cooked hamburgers w/ ground meat smashed in pie cooker, over open fire, the grease would drip out and cause a higher flame, they cooked fast, and eaten med rare. probably the best i ever made. but only one at a time. i know it isn`t safe to eat ground meat like that any more.just found another cast iron pie cooker, waiting to take the grandchildren camping this summer. and teach them how to cook over an open fire. my grand kids love camping. they live 500 miles away, and the summer always goes fast. rich

these are very simple to make. all you need is two pepsi product cans (empty)

with scissors( not wifes good pair) cut each can 3/4" tall just save the bottom
use scissors to cut 1/4" cuts around the top of 1 of the cans
with a very small nail or a needle punch 32 to 40 holes around OUTSIDE
of bottom ring ( the smaller these holes are the better it will work) and put 5 small ones in the middle of the bottom( this is where the fuel is added)
put top canbottom into bottom canbottom add small strip of metal tape around seam on side
put in 1oz. of denatured alcohol or regular rubbing alcohol and light with a match.
should take 5 minutes to complete aftermaking the first one.

this should be used with a stand to hold the pot up off the stove maybe 3/4" of an inch ( you want the blue flames only if you see the red ones its not low enough) Usually esbit stove works as a stand for me.

any one know how to make it?
