I was browsing over at Chuck Fenwick's site and found this list of gear for a Combat Corpsman's Medical Bag:
http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/index.htm

It contains:
Contents:

One roll wire fabric, 5" x 36" (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/images/sam-wire.jpg)
Two bottles of aspirin (http://www.medicalcorps.org/pharmacy/aspirin.html), 324 mg, 100s
Three packages of morphine (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/morphine-injectors.htm) inj. 1/4 g, 5s<o></o>
One bottle tetracaine hydrochloride
ophthalmic sol. (http://www.medicalcorps.org/pharmacy/tetracycline.htm) <o></o>
Three bottles povidone-iodine sol. (http://www.medicalcorps.org/pharmacy/PovidoneIodine.htm)1/2 fl oz.<o></o>
Two packages atropine inj. (http://www.medicalcorps.org/pharmacy/AtropinesulfateUSP.htm), 12s
Two muslin triangular bandages (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/images/Triangular%20Bandage%201.jpg)
Two large battle dressings, 7 1/4 x 8 (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/BattleDressingLarge.htm)
Eight medium battle dressings 4 x 7 (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/BattleDressingMedium.htm)
One roll adhesive tape, 3 " x 5 yds (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/AdhesiveTape.htm)<o></o>
Six packages of Band-Aids, 6s<o></o>
One pair scissors, bandage (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/Scissors.htm)
One tourniquet <o></o>
One airway, plastic adult/child
(http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/Airways.htm)
One thermometer, oral (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/Thermometer.htm)
One card of safety pins, medium, 12s
One surgical instrument set, minor surgery (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/SurgicalKit.htm)
Two books field medical cards <o></o> (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/DD1380.htm)
One pencil, black lead, mechanical
Two packages gauze, roller, 3 " x 5 yds (http://www.medicalcorps.org/uobag/KerlixRollerBandage.htm)I'd add to this:
Traumadex, 1 small container
Quick Clot, 1 pkg
Bacitracin ointment, 1 tube
Benedryl capsuls, bottle of 100
2 or 3 packages of 3-0 or 4-0 Ethilon suture
2 or 3 eye dressings
Steri-strips

I'd dump:
One tourniquet (use a triangular bandage for a tourniquit if needed)
Bandage scissors (I carry mine on my belt, not in a bag)
Mechanical Pencil (goes in my pocket, not in the bag)
2 Books field medical cards (I don't need to "tag" my patients).
Bandaids (let the troops carry their own)
Thermometer, oral (replace with the plastic digital forehead type)

And I'd change:
The "Card" of safety pins (pitch the card and hook the pins together, then pin to side of bag).

With the exception of the morphine, tetracaine solution, and atropine injection, everything here is readily available.

Everyone's got his/her own preferences, but this looks like a good starting point.
