OK, at home you have plans and supplies. You have a home that you can defend if needed, no problems there.

What do you do if you decide to go on vacation or visit a college buddy who is greater then eight hours away?

Scenario A, terrorist attack in NYC. Major panic, possible other threats elsewhere.

Do some of you never go more then a specified distance from home?

Travel by automobile whenever possible in order to keep your firearms, 72hr bag etc.. with you.

I have chronic IBS, so any trips for me HAVE to be close to home. Not only that but I got my fill of travel from my rock n roll days and have no desire to see anything but my home turf. (If I do I can watch the "Travel Channel"...)

Most of my travels are within 400 miles, or a tank of gas. When I arrive at my destination, I fill up so I have enough to get home. I have a rubbermaid storage box that has enough supplies "to get me home".

When I travel farther than a tankfull, I am usually in an area where I know someone who will supply me enough to get back.

BUT, I don't stop travelling just because I might not be able to get back if it hits the fan while I am away.
I just keep track of available resources and have fun.

I have a 24hr GMHB in the Explorer at all times. I keep a variety of extra stuff in there as well. I use to live on the extreme coast of NC and for all intensive purposes on an island. Everytime I traveled there was a risk of not getting home, so then I carried a BOB / 72hr bag at all times. Now back on firm ground I have set a rule that if it is more than 2 hours away (1/2 tank of gas) I will up grade to my 72hr bag and either a 12ga or a rifle of some type. (Usually M4 since I have a Blackhawk vest ready to roll) I suggest looking at how far your normally travel and think about fuel usage to get back. The 2hr / 1/2 tank rule works because I should always be able to get home.

When I decide to go more than 8 hours away, I go. Since I'm far more likely to die while driving to the destination than I am to die/get stranded due to a catastrophe, I don't worry much about it. I've got three kids under 8 years old when on vacation. There isn't a BOB made that will allow us to walk 1000 or more miles home if something bad does happen. We take stuff along to make the trip more pleasant, and those things would also suffice if we were stuck for a time. Life is about playing the odds. To me, travel is worth the risk. Don't let the fear of what "might" happen detract from living life.

I get caught in this rut a lot, and occasionally have to fall back and re-evaluate. I like being prepared but, unlike Hitler, I wanna leave the bunker every now and then...

I like the old Coast Guard rule for SAR cases - 1/3 tank out, 1/3 tank back, 1/3 tank in reserve. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that everyone's not out to get me!

While I do carry on occassion, I also realize that I'm out of position at least five hours a day. And something else I realize, have no mercy on sheeple. If I'm out of position and I have to get back into home turf, I will do what is required to do so, take a car, take a life, and or both. Anyone not capable of doing "what is necessary" deserves what they get delevered upon them.
