I was doing a search and this came up. Dated today. They want $120 for 200 rounds of delinked Port! That's .60 per round folks. I know it's a sellers market but this seems a bit excessive. Here's the link:

It IS ridiculous . . . but what's there to do about it? It's always "whatever the market will bear," you know.

I live just down the road from J&G Sales (big-time ammo movers) and those guys tell me that the ammo just flys out the door these days. They got in a few pallets of Hungarian steel-core 7.62x54r a while back, and they were SOLD OUT of it even before their advertising flyer arrived in people's mailboxes!

It's just nuts, I tell you!

I talked to Pat at Pat's reloading, super nice guy. He said that he bought 12,000 lbs of 846 in November. Now he is down to under 2,000lbs. .308 bullets are getting hard to find. Even LC M60 brass is difficult to get ahold of. Things are definetly changing and the AWB is up again.

The economy is in the toilet, we're in a 2 billion dollar a day war the the President says may last 100 years. Bird flu scares, memories of hurricane Katrina. Our Gov't telling us to stockpile food and infering that if something happens we're on our own. No wonder people are buying up ammo and the price is going up. $120 / 200 for something that 6 months ago was $40 / 200 however seems like price gouging. After seeing that I would have to be hard pressed to buy ANYTHING from them.

Yours in survival

The crazy thing is that they are selling ammo at what seems to be whatever price they ask. Seriously, who is buying it all? I realise there is likely a LOT less available now than 2-3 years ago, but when AE.223 is 265/1000 why would anyone buy it? And it fly's off the shelves.

I never thought I would see the day that $170/1000 Wolf 7.62x39/.223 was a good deal. And its constantly out of stock.

I need to work more overtime...

I stopped at a gunshop here in Davison (it's a famous gunsight co.). I was going to buy a box of 1000 CCI #41 primers - until I saw the price $31! All the Primers were about the same price or within .50. Heck at that price it's cheaper to buy loaded Wolf 7.62 x 39 than to reload it! INSANE!!!

Apparently they know something I don't or they just see an opportunity to profiteer on the current paranoia about guns? I walked out without buying anything. I ordered a few from Wideners for less even with the hazmat.

In the short run they'll make some $$ but in the long run they're cutting their own throats. When businesses do shit like that I'll go out of my way to NOT give them anymore of my business.

At todays ammo prices I don't see how anybody can leave brass at the range. I just got into reloading because of the prices of ammo. I shoot 308 and all of my cases are re-loadable. But it seems to me that there is a lot of panic buying out there that is driving up the prices. If you think this is bad wait until a nationwide assault weapons ban comes to a vote in congress. Weapons prices will triple.

I sent a friend to the Phoenix gunshow this past weekend to buy up all the lake city M-80 he could carry and he said it was selling like a scene from the stock exchange...

$400 per thousand.

Today is a dark day in history... with many more to come. :(
Silver nearly hit $15.

As surplus ammo is doubled and tripled in price whether intentionally or not, we are seeing the breath of Liberty begin to exhale...

How many will show up on April 19th when they literally can't afford to? Knowing it may be their entire stock? I recommend only practicing with re-loadable ammo, brethren, berdan primed and a tenth reload may be all our children or grandchildren will have standing between them and tyranny twice that which we fear. As I told a friend who has waited to purchase any gun, much less an MBR, "Go invest in a bow and alot of arrows, at least it is not being hyper-inflated by our government, and perhaps you can pass it on to your children, who may one day utter up a sarcastic, 'Thanks alot'".

Ammunitionstore.com has OFV 1970's man. $100 for 400 rounds. Brass case and boxer primed. 147 gr FMJ. And kids, if you act now, A free ammo can. Gosh aren't they just nice. I believe it is Indian origin. Have not shot any, but the price is a bit cheaper. Here is the URL They also have the Wolf http://www.ammunitionstore.com/index.htm

I believe the form is just for age-legality issues. Since you filled it out, you can now place your order by phone. I didn't see an online shopping cart. I have always bought from them in person at the gun shows. the number is 1-800-432-0255, and is also listed at the top of the web pages.

As far as ammunition goes these days there are good deals out there still if you are vigilant. 70's Indian is supposed to be good ammo (I've never tried it) and currently thats not a bad price. I think patience is the word for the day right now. Save your cash and put it aside for when you find a decent offer then stock up.

Panic is setting in with the gun crowd. The truly prepared individules can take thier time and stock up slowly. Last month hunting season came to an end and my Walmart had decent deals on .308 and 30-06 ammo. $10 a box is reasonable for premium hunting ammo. You don't have to buy 2500 rounds at a time. Even just a couple hundred surplus rounds every other month is not a bad way to stock up. I whole heartedly believe I do not have to fire off 100 rounds to train so stocking up slowly to me is never shooting more than half of what I buy, and usually much less. I can still train, sometimes without even firing a shot. Snapping in in my living room is a common occurance.

Likely this is a blip on the radar screen as far as availability/cost goes. Its happened in the past and will likely happen again. In my mind there is still TON'S of surplus out there just waiting to be imported. Hell you can still buy 8mm from the 50's so trust me when I say we have not seen the end of it yet.

The important thing is to just stay calm and buy it when you see it. Reloading is also a reasonable choice right now if you have the time. You can reload a couple hundred rounds several times to train with and save your "new" ammo for a rainy day.

I saw that Midway has Winchester white box for $99 / 200 rds. I emailed Grafs to see if they'd match the price. They replied that they can't even BUY it for that price now. I might order some.

God, did I say that?

JR, I hope you are right, but I am not taking any chances with the crowd that decides to let surplus into the country. That is like believing the ship's crew when they say that there will be enough lifeboats on the Titanic...

That deal has been going on for a while. I bought a pack about 18 months ago from them and they were in great condition. Bought another pack about a month ago and still in great condition. They must have bought up a bunch of them!

Stock up now I say.

I have only had one issue with a Steyr magazine. It may have been a damaged follower, but during an Appleseed last year I had an ammo dump that dumped all the ammunition onto the floor plate with the follower sticking straight up vertically. I would only expect that kind of behavior from Triple K or a USA Magazine.

Well I got my 400 round $100 can of 1976 Indian today. It is in a still sealed 50 Caliber can, 50 round cloth bandoleers. I have not fired it any, but it looks pretty good, and wayyyyy better than the other Indian did. I could just pull some bullets and measure the powder charges and that would tell me most of what I want to know.

Somewhere I saw those nice 140 round SA battlepacks... at $60/each.. ouch..

I went to William's gunsight and picked up 500 rds of 70's Indian for $150 out the door. The can that 400 of them were in was glued shut from the can seal sticking to the can body. The ammo inside was nice looking. I threw 'em in the tumbler and in an hour they looked awesome!!

and they're boxer primed!

Question for the gallery, what bullet weight do you like to use in your 7.62 Nato reloading?

I prefer at least a 150 gr HP for general use and 168 gr SPBT for long range work.

Any thoughts?

MdlMkr 7.62

150's & 168's usually work ok in 1 - 11" and 1 - 12" twist barrels. 173's and up usually need a faster twist. National Match M1A's have a 1 - 10" twist to stabilize the heavier bullets

I load 150gr Remington Core-Lokt softpoints for my FAL almost exclusively. They function reliably, and are a bit more accurate in my rifle than your average surplus (which is where I get my brass from). Spring of '06, they were running about $10 per hundred. Midway has since rasied the price by around 50%.

As I only shoot about a hundred rounds a year through my FALS (I'm too poor to being doing wasteful "mag dumps"), it doesn't take too much reloading to keep me supplied for a long while.

Even still, I haven't even begun to use up the port/SA/RG/Hirt that I bought by the case over the past several years when it was cheap. Still using up the NORINCO I got from before the '94 AWB.

Years of frugality and self-denial have paid off, as far as ammo supply goes.

Two things, is Hirtenberger good quality ammo? I've not seen it very often, but spotted some last night late night surfing. I'm trying to remember where.
........and now a shameless plug ;)
I have a case of Remington UMC .308 for sale. Check the classifieds.

Hirtenberger ammo is said to be very good stuff . . .

HOWEVER, there have been reports recently of some bogus Hirt ammo hitting the markets lately, and it may be downright dangerous.

I'm working off memory right now (somebody step in if I've got something wrong) but it appears someone bought up a shitload of Hirtberger BLANKS, and then trimmed the cases, seated bullets into the cases, and then began selling them as the real thing.

I don't know if they dumped the blank powder and replaced it with smokeless powder of the correct burning rate, but even if they did, those cases were loaded as blanks because (usually) the cases didn't meet the manufacturer's quality standards for loaded ammunition. And, if by chance one of those got out with a bullet seated atop the original blank powder, it would almost certainly destroy the rifle (and likely leave the shooter seriously injured, too).

So, I think that Hirtenberger ammo is fine . . . but just be sure it's genuine "Hirt" ammo before you shoot it!
