This is a question for the guys who plan on using the AR15 system for their SHTF weapon. What is your feeling on steel mags? I believe that H@K went with steel and I think c-mag or magpull is coming out with a stainless steel mag. I believe also that the SA85 uses a steel mag too so the question is with these people going away from aluminum and back to steel do steel mags have a place in your bug out kit and if so where should one buy mags from or companies to stay away from?

Ive got some of the SA85 steel mags that I replaced the followers with Magpul followers. Haven't used them yet to see how they work. Might do that on next weeks 3 gun match.
H&K's mags are supposed to be the shiznitz...but I've seen 2 fail in use. Mine and another gentleman's failed during a 3 gun match. :(
Magpul is coming out with a stainless AR mag, as well as new polymer mags in the very near future.
Would I use steel mags? Sure as long as they function although steel is marginally heavier.

Quite a number of my mags are steel. Being that the FAL mags are steel, I don't have a problem with it. Mine are the Taiwan mags made for the military. You don't see them as much anymore. They have been nothing but reliable for me.

I've used steel mags for a while (10+ years) and haven't had a problem with them. The ones I have are Singapore surplus. I like 'em. I've seen them lately for $8 ea in quantity. Just my .02

MdlMkr7.62,are the mags you are talking about for the AR or the Fal?I didn't know AR steel mags were available.Aluminum mags do seem to need a little more care for rolling in the dirt,I would think. Not ever being in the military I am really stupid on real world stuff.

They are AR magazines. They are a bit heavier than the Aluminum ones but as a benefit they drop out easily when they're empty! I think SG has them right now (yeah I know, they're a@#holes). They're probably available from other sources too.

CDNN investments is selling Asian military mags for 7 bucks each and green followers for 69 cents each. On a side note if you plan on getting a Galil soon these guys have mags at good prices for now. I ordered some of these mags and will let you guys know what they look like when they come in.

Yeah, those are the ones. They do seem to be more durable than Aluminum mags. I don't mind the extra ounce or two that they weigh.

Group buy? These mags are only 7 bucks each with a flat 9.99 shipping charge. And you don't pay tax if you are out of state. I pay 15 bucks a piece for my Glock mags which means that I can get 2 of these AR mags for the price of one Glock mag. I always look for a deal but sometimes it just don't get any cheaper and I hate missing out on a good product at a great price. Think back to 89 dollar G1 kits, 119 STG kits and recently the 149 Imbel kits. All are gone. Hell about 6 months ago I got new AR mags(aluminum) for about 8 bucks each from kycrawler at the falfiles . I don't see any deals like that around anymore. the point is sometimes you got to jump on things and hope you timed it right. I am kind of hoping that if any of you have had any problems with steel mags that they could post here so that I could see what to look for.

Try here. I've bought from them before. Their steel 40 round mags work flawlessly in my RRA.

I just received my order from CDNN and the AR mags are great. Blue steel with black followers. They are wrapped in oil paper and covered in oil, labeled as Asian Steel Military Mag. They lock up perfect in my ARs and while I plan on changing the followers with the green anti tilt followers the black followers that came with it seem to work fine. The only factory stamp I can find on these mags is a 9 at about a 45 degree angle near the front of the mags close to the base plate. I have used these mags in the past and I have yet to have a problem. I even converted 6 of them to old style AR180 and they are perfect. I will try out these newest mags this weekend and post if anything negative happens with them.

Changing the follower is 1 more compliance part :D I know it's an AR but there are other rifles that take the AR mag ......
