Cocked and locked? Hammer down on a live round? Hammer down on an empty chamber? And why? I carry mine in what I think is called "condition 2". Hammer down on a live round. The reason why is my long love of single-action revolvers. To me it is no different to cock the 1911 before I fire it than to to cock my '51 Navy, actually it's second nature to me...;)

I'm a cocked and locked guy Doc. I'm still trying to settle on a holster for my Kimber Ultra Raptor II for CC.

Cocked and locked.
Dr.X ...dude, you trying to shoot yourself? Hammer down on a live round is a no no. Go out to your backyard, point it away from yourself and smack the hammer with something and see what happens.
1911 style pistols do not have a firing pin disconnect or some means to prevent the hammer from riding the firing pin like the Sig P220.

I have been toting one 1911 or another for nearly 40 years and I believe cocked and locked is the only way to go. Condition 2 is alright , I guess , if your reflexes will allow you to get it in action quickly. Better than condition 3, anyhow.
You can carry a 1911 with a chambered round, hammer down with no danger because it has an inertial firing pin. I believe tests have shown that you have to drop one from something like 40 feet , directly on the muzzle before it will go off.

I carry my SA 1911A1 aLOT and have dropped the sucker numerous times doing this and that and I'm here talkin' to you'uns. To quote Jeff Cooper in his article 'The Yankee Fist", 'But probably the single greatest problem of the recognition of the 1911 pistol was the unsound but widely-held belief that while a double action revolver can be carried on the person, fully loaded and ready to fire, without activating it, the self-loader was "unsafe" if carried fully loaded with a round in the chamber. It is hard to trace the origin of this belief since any careful study of the matter reveals it to be false. The pistol will not go off by itself. It's shooter must press its trigger. Therefore, while the shooter may be unsafe, the weapon itself cannot be...' ;)
