View Full Version : Emergency caches

Many of us herein work where the work is, that means that we work in high density population centers and our ability to be armed and vigilant are retarded by the environment we work in. So many of us have emergency caches of supplies stashed here and there for said complication, so that we may improvise, adapt and overcome this issue.
These caches are simple supplies like food, water, medical supplies, fuel, and possibly an alternate means of transportation like a cycle. Weapons too can be cached away, however these are normally secondary weapons systems that can be abandoned if the need arises.
It cost very little to rent a small mini-storage closet, likely less than $20 per month, some as little as $10, and these smaller storage sites can hold a huge amount of gear, food, water, fuels and weapons.
All of these supplies should be well contained and air tight, fuels stored in extremely air tight containers since many storage rental agreements forbid fuels to be stored at all. All liquids MUST be stored away from dry goods, any leak could render your gear and supplies worthless or possibly exposed to HAZMAT exposure via the local PD or FD.
The cache location should be in or about your route of escape and evasion, work place caches are not recommended since many employers forbid any weapons at all, and regularily search or use dogs to verify compliance.
Anyone have this in your planning?

I already live in the sticks, so this isn’t something I’m too concerned with . . . but I also have family still living in the Los Angeles area. They’re more than welcome to join me in my rural Arizona retreat when the balloon goes up, but I realize that actually GETTING them here might not be so easy.
So, having a cache set up for them in the California desert is an outstanding idea, and I am considering that myself. The desert town of Barstow, about 120 miles east of L.A., has a large number of these rental storage places, and since Barstow is the last place to fuel up for people heading east, it’s likely to be the dead-end point for a lot of Los Angeles refugees as soon as the Barstow gas pumps run dry.
So, as I see it, enough GASOLINE to get them to Arizona would be the number one priority - and as noted, that’s the one item the storage places usually forbid. One would need to do things discreetly, but I would imagine that if the gas were stored in secure containers, it would probably be no big deal. Given the summertime heat of the desert, though, it’d have to rotated annually, even if it was treated with something like Sta-bil.
If there were to be gun confiscation taking place along the way, I think it’s most likely to take place as they’re leaving the Big City, so certainly stashing a few second-tier firearms in the storage locker might be in order. Even a clunky old pump shotgun and a few boxes of shells might offer them considerable comfort, and they’d still be “California Legal” if they got caught during normal times.
Being the desert, a few jugs of water couldn’t hurt, either.
Along these notes, we just had an incident in Phoenix last week where some goofball had rented a storage unit, and had neglected to pay his rental fee. After a few months, the owners got fed up and opened it. It was filled with explosives! The police bomb squad had to clean it up!

from a close associate, his storage building got broke into and he lost a genset and a lot of tools, plus a lot of primary survival supplies.
This one of the reason to disperse and utilize secondary equipment, these buildings do get broken into, if you have this issue arise, be sure to change buildings afterwards, otherwise your likely have a reoccurance.

I have been thinking about this exact thing!!! I work about 30min from my apartment and have to cross 1 of 2 bridges to get home and everyone heading north will have to do the same thing. This sucks logistically, but atleast I know the other way and people from out of the area will not!!! Even the other night there was a minor wreck on my side of the bridge, I was in town on the south side of the river and had to make it home. I dumped it off on an exit ramp as soon as I spotted brake lights... so this being blocked is a regular thing!!!
Anyway to the point, I have been thinking about renting a storage building somewhere centrally located in the area I work. The down side being the storage building is tied to you in name and can be traced back to you.
In addition to some 2nd or 3rd line supplies, I have been thinking about making it a temporary shelter. Add a military cot, camp stove or canteen cup and stove, sleeping bag, 5gal bucket of kitty liter (toilet), of course TP, food, water, and a lantern. This a way you could hold up for a few days in there if you had too. Most of the buildings around here have electric or manual gates and high chainlink fences with barbwire around them.
Just some thoughts too... hit me back if you go anything to add....
