ANyone have a list of medicines that they'd like to keep around for any emergency?

I keep the following OTC meds on hand:
potassium iodate
aspirin - anti-inflammatory, blood thinner
Motrin - pain relief, anti-inflammatory
Alieve - pain relief, anti-inflammatory
Benedryl - allergy relief, sleep aid, treat mild anaflactic shock
Bacitracin - antibiotic topical petrolium jelly-based wound dressing
hydrocortizone cream - treats itching associated with mild allergic reactions and insect bites
Vasilene - treats chapped areas of skin
Orajel - topical anesthetic for toothache and minor wounds
oil of clove - treats toothache

All of the above can be purchased at Wal-Mart generically under the Equate brand.

In addition, I keep the following oral prescription drugs on hand:
Tylanol #3 with codene - pain reliever
Flexeril - alleviates muscle spasms
Xanax - anti-anxiety medication
Tetracyclene - antibiotic, treats infections

I also keep the following wound care products on hand:
Quick Clot - will stop major bleeding from major vessels
Traumadex - will stop bleeding from head wounds
Gold Dust - will promote healing in certian hard to heal areas

Finally, I have a good commercial-grade antiseptic cleaner on hand:
Quat by Buckeye Chemical Co. - kills pretty much all known bacteria and virii

I haven't gone into equipment, bandages, or dressings here, since that's not the question you asked. I hope this list helps you out

Big omission is to forget anti-fungal ointment for tender areas.

When you need it, you REALLY need it unless you are somewhere you can run around full commando in the sun to kill it.

I'm curious about the xanax. Is that something you yourself have to take or do you keep it on hand for when people are geekin'? I ask because you have to have a scrip for that and I'd think it wouldn't be prescribed out of hand...

as ever,

Good thought... I've added this and also Monostat for vaginal fungal infections for my wife!

No, I'm not on Xanax, but I do have a supply on hand in the freezer (where it doesn't age) that I got from when my mother had terminal CA of the lungs a few years ago. One of the nastier side effects of lung cancer is death by slow suffocation, which causes great anxiety. Xanax helps to reduce the anxiety, and Mom died quite peacefully.

One of the best books I have ever Read for this is the "Specicial Forces Medical Handbook" and "Survival and Austere Medicine", both are a must in the war chest

Make sure you've read and understood the books before you need the information! I've always wondered about first aid kits with the instruction booklets inside. I can just picture some poor soul bleeding out while the "medical expert" flips through the booklet trying to figure out what the hell to do... :p

What about anti-diarrhea meds? Imodium AND anti-gas

Anti-gas medication isn't exactly at the top of the list for survival (unless you're sealed in a bunker somewhere eating a diet of beans and raw cabbage), but there are far better and safer ways to control diarrhea than Immodium (see "Where There Is No Doctor").

Right you are.. however for the short term events.. or to keep in a BoB,
Immodium can be very usefull... The anti-gas compliments the anti-craps meds by easing another symptom that commonly accomponies the shatz...

You or one of your family members, friends, teammates, harem members etc.. gets a heavy dose of the craps and those small pills can prove to be a lifesaver in more than the obvious....
