Now that I have an audience.

Basically what do you guys/gals think is the worst threat to our NC/SC area?

I am still looking at the natural disaster being first and foremost.

Hurricanes for you along the coast, I use to live on the Outer Banks of NC. Kinda scary out there and that is what got me into survival mode.

Not counting economic collapse? :p

The thing that seems to threaten the WNC mountains most is the recent lack of adequate rainfall. Combined with the pine beetle infestation, our area is ripe for the wildfires that consistently plague those out West. I know for a fact that our whole mountaintop would go up like a blue flame if a good forest fire was to start in this area. And the BAD thing is there is nothing much you can do to prepare except brush your land and cut all your trees, which I am not ready, or willing, or able to do. I guess this would fall under the "natural disaster" description...

worst threat? Sumter SC was listed as the most dangerous metropolitan area in 2004 by the FBI Crime Stats. We don't get the worst weather here, but a Rodney King type incident would likely have catastrophic effect.

(I work in Sumter, actually reside in Camden--I have a 35 mile commute daily on some very rural backroads...hence the need for a well stocked GHB. It works for vehicle AND social breakdowns;) )

I have a feeling that I'd see/hear something like economic collapse, civil unrest, weather emergency--anything short of a terrorist attack-- coming for awhile, and that's why I don't usually keep a small arsenal in the vehicle...but it's ready when needed.

Now that I live in the smack-dab middle of NC I can go any which a way to escape truly severe weather. We have been have a lot of earthquakes here lately, well nothing over a 3.0. But a lot of sheeple to not know there is a big fault line running under the middle of NC. Apparently she is a shaking and twitching a little. Imagine if an earthquake did hit the east coast!!!! I hope that one really does not happen.

Where I am at I have to head east or west to avoid a large city. So civil unrest in one of those would dictate my bug-out route. I am still looking at some family owned places in the mountains of VA. Only place I have and they would be off the the beaten path.

As for the biggest threat to my AO, well I am not sure. Ice storms pose problems, but really just lock everything down. I can live without electricity for days in my apartment if I have too. Hurricanes really do not reach this far inland on a regular basis, thank God. :D Civil unrest in general would be problematic, since I live in an economically depressed area of NC. The people here would storm the Walmart and demand food and such. Economic collapse is going to happen, just a matter of when. I think the signs are there and top analyst even are saying we are heading into a recession. The DEM's are probably going to try to raise taxes, thus hurting the working man even more.

Just some random thoughts this morning. Any input?

Ahh…
I’m late but I’m here!

I remember a shoot in NC coordinated by someone over on the FAL Files taking place on 25NOV. I will not be free for said event due to my work sked but this type of thing would be ideal for folks to meet, exchange ideas etc…

If at all possible I think a planned shoot in the future (JAN-MAR time frame) would be a good idea; but where?

The best events would be the ones we create ourselves, eh wot? There are plenty of good places to camp in wonderful Pisgah National Forest. A cookout/campout would be a gas. Plus we could always meet and greet at one of Moses's FAL shoots. My biggest problem is lack of fundage which I don't expect to let up 'til after New Years. I am definitely open to getting us Carolina survivaholics into some kind of cohesion...

I am fortunate to have Myrtle Beach as a possible bug out to or bug out from location. My parents have a townhouse there and I am going to put together a few 72hr bags to keep there. I do frequent the area and I can use it as a bug in location. It is not my first choice, but their townhouse is well off the beaten path and has plenty of wild game in the area.

But yes I too am strapped for fundages until after the holidays. I would say a camping meet-n-greet would be great for the NC / SC Suvivalholics. A shoot would be good too, but I am .308-less for now. I can whip out the Vper AK and put some rounds down range.

Hey yall, I just stumbled on a link or at the Files and found yall so I thought I would chime in.

Although I do not live in NC( I am in Georgia) I shop in Murphy several times a week as my house is 4miles from the state line, hopfully that is good enughf?

As already stated wildfires are a major issue with all the standing dead wood drought would just compound the problem.
some other issues could be:

-Siesmic activity
Although this region is not concidered an active area there are several faults in the area and there are in excess of 20 quakes a year in this region(>.4.0), what if a 6.5 hit. New Madrid is a couple hundred miles west. If that fault were to rupture like it did in the 1800's millions could die and could shake hard enught as far away as Ashville to cause major damage. But my major concern with this type of situation is more the human wave coming out of Arkansas, Tennessee and MO., kinda like what happend to Atlanta, Houston and San Antinio after Katerina.

-Flooding/ sever weather/ tornados
Coastal NC had a dose of flooding several years ago and look how hard eastern Tennessee has been hammered this past summer and fall. In the Peidmont region it may not be as much of an issue but here is the mountains 5+" of rain could be a real issue with all the new construction and all the halfbacks(nice way of saying YANKEES) building off the sides of cliffs and along ridgelines mudslides could prove to be problematic. My wifes people are from Lake Lure/Bat Cave and back in the mid 90's they caught a deluge in the valley and the Little Broad river over ran it's banks undercut roads, washed out bridges, sent a few houses down mountain sides etc, etc, etc...

A thought for those in the mountains besides myself, just for conversation, what if there was a Jerico type scenero or some other event that caused everyone who saw Red Dawn to head to the mountains? are you prepaired for the onslaught from the starving hord who made it to your front door and does not have gas to go further or back to where they came?

Edited to add:

WOOO HOOOO I love this place, I show up out of the blue and I am blessed enughf to get Survivaholic # .308, maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket or something.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!!! I have been busy with work and the holiday season. I am blessed to have to work on Christmas Eve, but hopefully it will not be a bad shift.

At any rate... the mountain thing is a major problem. I use to live in Cullowhee while in college at WCU. I have 4 years of mountain life and knowledge to get me by. I would like to move back up that way in the coming years, we will see. I was up there a few years ago the weekend before they had the big hurricane rain storm and wash so many houses away. That was devastating to the area and could have been much worse.

The fault line thing is also a concern of mine. There is a fault in middle of the state and as of late it has been getting more active. I am not a geophysicists but I think the world is starting to become more inhospitable. That is just an observation. It like the temperatures in NC are rising year after year and winter is a thing of the past. You will probably never see a White Christmas again, until the next ice age that is.

damn, another forum. like i got the time :D
moore county here, thought i'd stop by, tripped over a thread at the Files and ended up here.
as far as problems, i see water as an issue. that, and the fact that Bragg is so close. not sure if that would be good or bad. you really have to see this county when there's ice on the road. talk about a natural disaster !!!! being a realatively small county, supplies tend to run out quickly. no power, no gasoline. where i live, half the population freaks out when there's a frost delay effecting their T time.

Asking for thoughts on threats to NC, I agree that to the West in the mountains floods are probably a major concern. But to me living smack dab in tha middle of "Military Base central" (Seymour Johnson,Bragg,Legune,Cherry Point,Pope all are less thatn 2 hours away from me) I worry more about some sort of military strike more than anything.

I was in the Pentagon when the SHTF, and after that, the beltway bandit mess, and the Anthrax letters. Guess that is a compelling reason to live in NC now. Getting away from Ground zero has really let me relax, I am convinced that the bastards will hit it again, just a matter of time.
Hampstead is in an expansion mode with the new houses and building going on, but traffic here is a joke compared to DC. I worry about bird flu, and Mexicans overrunning us, as well as Tsunamis and hurricanes. I would rather worry about natural disasters and influenza than crazy Arabs dropping in unannounced anyway.

I live just north and inland of the Outer Banks and was going to mention Hurricanes; glad you brought it up. Remember, Floyd came in and flooded everything in the Neuse River watershed. Even Rocky Mount took serious damage.

When they come in at Wilmington and then move up just inland of the coast, its a flooding mess. Just don't locate in a flood plain.

The influx of illegals is not getting the attention it deserves. We have scads of them around here working construction, mainly. Wanna see how many? Go into a 7-11 at before work, morning coffee time; chances are that there are more of them than regulars. If TSHTF and there is no work, what are these people going to do? Wanna guess? Live off the land.... YOURS!

Threats to be aware of, as anyone else been paying attention to the rising level of gang activity here?
We are near Charlotte and it is incredible how it has escalated over the last 18 months.
Just something to keep in mind if you decide to come around for anything.

BTW, there is a gunshow coming up in Hickory on March 17 & 18.
I ended up missing both of the Charlotte shows this month due to work, but from what I heard there wasn't much to miss.

Enough rambling from me, I'll STFU now :p
