I'm still new to this thing but I'm guessing many feel mountains are the place to retreat should the SHTF. But living in a coastal area, I don't really see me being able to escape to the mountains should I need to get out of town in a hurry and just camp it out for a while. However, just north in SC there are a lot of swamp lands. Would these provide a good place to keep on the down low and hold out for a while or would some of the small coastal islands be better? Granted, I'd have to have a boat or some means to get to them but still, I feel that would be a better plan than trying to book for the mountains.

Your thoughts?

Couldn't tell you man. It all depends on what you are familiar/comfortable with. I have arctic survival training so spending a winter in the mountains appeals to me. Spending time on an island with limited resources doesn't. It is all in what is familiar to you.

Hmm... well, I like the area. I figure if I can get on an island (I didn't mean a coastal island like a barriar island, I meant more like an island in the Low Country where you are up a river). I would think that gathering resources wouldn't be too hard and fresh water shouldn't be hard to get to, just purify it. This wouldn't work for long term I don't think. Maybe a month if need be but with my luck I'd do this and a hurricane would hit during this month lol!

Oh and I hate cold weather, haha! I've been around this area all my life and done camping and stuff up in the Low Country and have been camping alllll the weather that comes this way, except hurricanes but have been in a tropical storm or two.

If and when TSHTF, don't think your going to be able to go to some public land area or a Nat'l Forest. You and hundreds of thousands of SHEEPLE have already thought of that. Can't tell you how many times I've heard the answer to what will you do be "I'll just go the (country/Nat'l Forest) and hunt for my food.".

If you go on someones private property without permission, then your likely to get yourself shot.

I suggest your work strongly towards a retreat of some kind if bugging in is not an option. Next best is hook up with other of like mind who already have a retreat setup.

Also, not sure if you've been deep in the Low Country of SC but not a whole lot there unless you live around Hilton Head Island. It's a lot of swamp and islands mixed in. A lot of it looks untouched from how it was WAY back in the day.

I'm working on getting land to set up my retreat which will eventually become my house. In the mean time I'll be bugging in, with the ability to bug out. To where? Yup, the mountains. Not ideal as Ryder has stated but it is all I've got at the moment. I'm just hoping my training will be able to keep me more by the timber line as the less trained/prepared will have to go to lower elevations. Gotta do what you can when you can.

Ryder-
that is one of the smartest things I have ever heard said on these type forums about where to go when SHTF.
I don't think most people realize how many will indeed try to head to our State and federal wildlife areas and forests!

Hahaha, hell, that Jericho show even showed that in one of the shows. A bunch of refugees camping out in a state park on a river or lake.

Swampfox, I really don't think hiding out in the swamps is such a great idea, although I doubt you'll see too many people out there....

The swamps are chock full of cottonmouths, copperheads, black widows, gators, ticks....but the worst enemy you'll face out there is the swarms of mosquitos.

Last time I went pig hunting, I went out to a swamp in the Manchester State Forest....I was covered head to toe--gloves, hat, long sleeves, camo face veil. The only bare skin showing was around my eyes and my trigger finger....within 3 hrs, I had been bitten more times than I could count....I looked like Swamp Thing, and my hunting buddies are still calling me Lumpy. (they were smart enough to call it a day after 15 minutes....I really wanted to bag a hog, so I stayed...but even the damn pigs were smart enough to avoid the swamp in 75 degree weather)

My eyes were nearly swollen shut, and my trigger finger had swelled easily 3x the size it was before the trip. DEET appeared to be no deterrent to the little bastards at all. It was a truly miserable experience, and short of wearing a full dive suit--complete with bell helmet, I won't be going back out there until after the first freeze.

The only good news is that I'm apparantly immune to West Nile Virus.

Haha, yeah, haha, preaching to the choir on that nasty little things. Snakes and gators aren't so bad. They typically won't mess with you if you don't mess with them but those bastards will dive bomb your ass to death. CUDOS on the West Nile immunity!

Wow... I just had an idea for the BEST Survior ever... what if the immunity challenge meant not only got to stay on the island but you also don't get injected with some sort of illness? I would watch that show allllll day... call me a dreamer but wait till I own CBS!
