OK, I'm new to this forum and I'm just wondering what guys have on them right now? For me, I might be OK... I love WWII stuff and I'm just starting to learn survival stuff and want to get a better weapon for such events but if SHTF today, I'd have...
M1 Garand
German 98k
M3 Fighting Knife
I think the Garand would work out ok if I hid... a lot. What about you guys and ladies?

1903 sporter(100 rounds)
FAL I could assemble in less than 1/2 hour(broken down for Gun Kote).(400 rounds ready to go, components on hand for an additional 1000)
1911 I could fit the barrel in about an hour with hand tools(only have about 50 rounds for it though)
BFK- Big F'n Knife:)

hahaha, got to love the big f'n knife. I'm not sure how many of you think you'd be handy in a knife fight but if it came to that, I think I'd be pretty screwed unless you gave me 2 free shots before you attacked, lol. I suppose it would be more of an intimidation factor and use to cut things instead of an actual weapon if I had to fight someone with it. Now, if they didn't have a knife... yeah, I think I could win unless they're freaking trained then I'd just be mad.

I don't really know how to use it except where the sharp end goes! Last resort.

It makes very little sense to discuss "SHTF" unless you include a thorough explanation of what you mean by that term.
Othewise, you could be talking about anything from aliens attacking the earth to an unexpected visit from the in-laws.

That's the whole point, you won't have too much time to customize you bugout bag if it's a real emergency. You'll have to 'run what you brung', and improvise on the fly.
Swampfox,
I got ya covered dude for now... ;)

FAL, Ruger Single Six and 1911 the rest of my gun collection is at the retreat with more ammo than the law should probably allow and enough componets to reload 3-4 times that much.

It depends a lot on who you're with, what else you've got, and how you're trying to move it- or, once moved, how happy you are with where you're sitting.
In my case, I am NOT a 25-year-old doorkicker anymore, and I know it. But I can shoot better than most, and in a world filled with AR15/M16, AKs and shotguns, that can be a real useful skill whether working with pardners or considering the realities of being outnumbered.
Back when Y2K rolled around, my situation was MUCH worse, in a largish city of over a million that had already seen riots/arson/looting, never mind longer term troubles; I left Memphis after a summer storm knocked out power lines for a month, and it was 45 days before some corners of the city had power. My FAL sat at the door loaded and ready and my sweetie's SAR-2 was similarly handy around the clock, with one or the other of us there *holding down the fort* at all times. Yep, we had a bug-out plan too, altered a bit by the tree that parked itself across the front of my truck and took out the windshield. But within 24 hours, we had 3 other partners from our Y2K group doubled up with us, and two families from across town similarly inclined checking in with us. Had the decision to leave been made, we'd have probably all gone in a group, with at least three good options as to where and a couple of fallback plans.
Now, things are different for me. I'm in a rural Indiana town of 20K, and my son and his wife and newborn live nearby. I've got lifelong friends I could hook up with, and the local National Guard 1st Sergeant is a close pal.
But the possibility of a bug-out remains, and I've got the vehicles and equipment needed for a 1000-mile bugout if necessary. And in which case, my likely rifle would still be my FAL, and either my 870 or old M97 Winchester would be considered OEM for the truck.
Handguns? Yeah, sometimes, though for the weight, I'd rather have have an extra loaded magazine for the rifle or a couple of grenades. My old GI .45 is a little shaky, but I've got 7 magazines and a couple of hundred rounds of ball ammo for it. Plus a good dozen other suitable rifles and shotguns as backups or for use by other family/friends should they show up on the doorstep short of their own preferred equipment.
I think the Garand would work out ok if I hid... a lot. What about you guys and ladies?
Jason
I don't think you'd have to hide too much if you can use a Garand anywhere near the extent of its capabilities. But no matter how many Garand clips you have, you need more. For the price of a half-dozen decent M1A/M14 magazines, you can have enough Garand clips for 2400 rounds, more than I care to try to swim a river with....

Hey Arch, thanks for the tips. I love the Garand, it's one cool rifle if you ask me. I agree on the clips. I really need to get more and some ammo for the rifle. Haha, at reenactments I grab up the clips or catch them in the air and stuff them in a bag. If SHTF and it was me in a fight with others shooting back I REALLY don't see me taking the time to say, OH! I should pick that up! hahaha, Hmmm... I need to just put together a list of things I need...

HiroProx, has that p-85 been checked out for the de-cocker to function properly? My bil had one that he would shoot it or pull the hammer back and when he used the de-cocker it could fire a round when loaded. He had it happen at the range a few years ago and almost had a AD.He and a friend took a video camera and taped the malfunction and physically gave the tape to the Ruger rep with his pertinent info. They wrote him a letter and asked him to ship it to them and they will fix it.He did and they did and it worked great for years. If I remember correctly his was the reason they did a recall for that particular firearm. It was several years ago and I don't know the true specifics but I will call him today and see what the accuracy of this story is straight from the horses' mouth(not that the bil is a horse or any body part of one!:D ).Not any reflection on anyone's gun handling abilities but the best safety is 'tween the ears!
Just trying to be of help.

It has been pointed-out to me that with the threat of DemoRats out after reasons to ban firearms and ammunition that publically posting details and/or pictures of one's colection is a Security Breech of the gravest order.
I am not out to chastise but rather to caution myself included to keep one's comments general in nature rather than focused on one's personal collection.
Let's all stay a step ahead of our adversaries.

And when we let them fear every move we take..even a little bragging on our firearm collection..then we have allready lost.
Things are no where near the point where we should worry too much about posting a few pics.
Not untill a private sale ban comes aorund, then its time to "sell" the collection.

They DO make that little widget that holds the clip in until you hit the clip release button, and which allows loading single rounds with a partially-loaded or empty clip in place to boot.
I don't know if I'd want that setup on my only Garand, particularly if I had a buinch of ammo in clips that I wasn't too worried about losing. But if I had a second Garand, that might be the way to go with it, as a *hard times* spare.
BTW: today I've got the L1A1 FAL with me. And the rattly old M1911A1, and a Chinese $1.00 pocket folder from Wal-Mart.

SHTF right here right now and the zombies come crashing thru the door, I have the 1911a1 in the VMII on my belt and a AF folder in my pocket. Six feet behind me is a .30-30 ready to roll ,just incase a deer is dumb enughf to wander thru the yard, or to fight my way to the safe for the heavy artillery.
